AUS vs SL: Mitchell Marsh Gives Hilarious ‘Poor Strike-Rates’ Reply To Sunil Gavaskar’s ‘Geoff Marsh’ Query

Mitchell Marsh, Sunil Gavaskar

The 31-year-old Australia National Cricket Team hard-hitting all-rounder Mitchell Marsh was involved in a fun banter with the India National Cricket Team batting great Sunil Gavaskar after the World Cup clash between Australia and Sri Lanka.

The 14th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 saw the battle between the Pat Cummins-led Australia National Cricket Team and Kusal Mendis-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team on Monday, October 16 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow.

Batting first, Sri Lanka were off to a spectacular start in the match as opening batsman Pathum Nissanka (61) and Kusal Perera (78) showcased a batting masterclass, leaving the opposition team in frustration.

The Aussie captain Pat Cummins took the responsibility and he broke the opening stand by dismissing Nissanka. The first wicket opened the floodgates and Sri Lanka lost wickets at regular intervals to eventually get bundled out for 209 in 43.3 overs.

Chasing the target, Australia lost Steve Smith and David Warner in the 4th over itself. However, Marsh showed his power-hitting and smashed a quickfire 52 runs to steady the ship.

After the dismissal of Marsh, Josh Inglis and Marnus Labuschagne took responsibility and steered Australia closer to the target with their 77-run partnership. In the end, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis finished the game to help Australia win by 5 wickets.

I’m just making up for all his poor strike rates – Mitchell Marsh’s funny reply to Sunil Gavaskar

After the first win of Australia in World Cup 2023, Sunil Gavaskar and Mitchell Marsh were involved in a post-match discussion alongside a couple of other experts.

That was when Sunil Gavaskar decided to ask Mitchell Marsh a question regarding his father and the response that the hard-hitting all-rounder gave left everyone in splits.

Here’s How The Conversation Panned Out:

Sunil Gavaskar: “Didn’t your father ever teach you to play like this (shows defense)?”

Mitchell Marsh: “I’m just making up for all his poor strike-rates”.

Notably, Mitchell Marsh’s father Geoff Marsh played 50 Tests and 117 ODIs for Australia. He had a strike rate of 35.13 in Tests and 55.93 in ODIs. Mitchell, meanwhile, has a strike rate of 52.79 in Tests and 93.85 in ODIs.

Notably, Geoff Marsh is only the third Test player – after Walter Hadlee and Lala Amarnath – to have two sons play Test cricket in Shaun Marsh and Mitchell Marsh.
