The Pat Cummins-led Australia National Cricket Team beat the Kusal Mendis-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team to earn their first victory in the ongoing edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup on Monday, October 16 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow.
The Aussies were invited to bowl first after losing the toss and they did an awful job in the beginning. The Australian bowlers were taken to the cleaners by Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera.
However, they made a stunning comeback in the match and bundled Sri Lanka out for 209. The Lankan Lions looked set to go past 300 at one moment but they went from 125/0 to 209 all-out in no time.
For Australia, Adam Zampa was the pick of the bowlers as he bagged 4 wickets. He was well supported by Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc who picked two wickets each. Also, Glenn Maxwell got one wicket.
Chasing the target, Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis smashed good half-centuries. Also, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis chipped in with crucial runs and Australia completed the run-chase in 35.2 overs.
The 5-wicket win against Sri Lanka was Australia’s first victory in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as they had faced crushing defeats in their first two matches against India and South Africa.
Outside noise doesn’t bother us a lot – Pat Cummins
During the post-match presentation ceremony, Pat Cummins said that the energy of his side was great on the field and they bowled well. Pat Cummins said:
“Nothing said much on the back of two losses. The energy on the field was great. They started very well. We bowled decently. We stayed at it. The bowlers hit the deck hard. I think a high 300 was par on that.”
When asked about the impact of outside noise after back-to-back losses in the World Cup, Pat Cummins said that it doesn’t bother them. Pat Cummins said:
“There is a lot of people watching this. Outside noise doesn’t bother us a lot. All parts of the game came together today. We would want to keep it up.”
